In its 7,000 square foot facility in the uptown area, York Academy of Martial Arts offers a plethora of training programs for adults and kids. With a focus on the internal and external arts (discipline of the mind and of the body), the Academy is balanced between tai chi, martial arts, pilates and physical fitness for the older set, while children benefit from teachings of karate, ju jitsu, and self-discipline.
A Brief Tour of the Facility
The York Academy of Martial Arts is fully equipped with a universal weight room replete with certified trainers that can work out a weight training program with you that will achieve your specific goals. A warm-up area is located on the upper floor, and is fitted with heavy bags and portable contact equipment. Next is the 1,100 square foot training hall where all the classes are taught, separated by age and skill level. And lastly, the 1,600 square foot main training area is home to the martial arts flooring system, which absorbs a lot of the shock from falling and grappling drills. Also found within is a pro shop and lounge area, where parents can watch their kids via a closed circuit TV.
Academy’s Accolades
The York Academy of Martial Arts is operated by sensei Richard Verlaan, who has trained in martial arts since 1984. Since the York Academy has opened, it has been recognized by the Consumers Choice Gold Award as the top school in Toronto for martial arts and self-defense, and was also awarded best karate school by the North York Mirror.
