The Umbra Superstore on John Street looks like it could be from the future. Metal and glass mix with bold pink lighting to create a feeling of up-to-the-minute style. Founders Paul Rowan and Les Mandelbaum have created a shopping experience that captures the essence of their brand. It’s hip, urban living accessories are primarily geared towards young people on a budget. Inside the shop, the white walls and open concept design puts the focus on the pieces.
Hip, but on a budget
Inside you’ll find both large and small design solutions. Large items like sofas and chairs have a minimalist flair to them. The lack of frills makes it easier to squeeze them into tight fitting places. Designer Karim Rashid’s signature garbage can is a popular item. As are the eco-friendly bamboo kitchen and bathroom fixtures. The merchandise makes good use of smooth surfaces and funky colours. There are plenty of practical items to outfit an apartment or an office. Desk chairs, work tables, plenty of lamps, mirrors—all with a refreshingly modern design. Picture frames are both unique looking and affordably priced. The kitchen stools are also big seller.
