Before the current era of online poker tournaments (wherein competitors that don’t even have to get dressed to participate) and the legions of stupor-inducing VLTs, gambling was a social experience. And that’s precisely the atmosphere that the sophisticated, elegant Turf Lounge - a nostalgia-soaked establishment located right in the heart of the financial district - has sought to recreate.
A Day at the Races
Turf Lounge caters to a very specific - and some say disappearing - breed of bettor: the horse racing aficionado. Although Turf Lounge doesn’t make placing a wager mandatory, it certainly is easy to get swept up in the adrenaline rush. There are over sixty television screens placed strategically around the vaulted ceilings and turn-of-the-century décor. Bets can be placed through automated terminals or with the tellers in the main lounge, and staff are on hand to guide the novice bettor through the basics of wagering terminology.
Refined Dining Experience
Turf Lounge also provides a refined dining experience that expertly complements the intimate setting. The menu features a variety of fresh seafood dishes, including an ingenious pan-seared tuna Nicoise garnished with chipolini onions and quail eggs. Also of note is the Turf Land and Sea, pan-seared beef tenderloin with jumbo tiger-shrimp and any of Turf Lounge’s pastas that are made daily from scratch. The wine list is truly overwhelming, with well over one hundred selections including ports, champagnes, and ice wines. Such a peculiar combination of class, ambiance, and wager are truly rare today, but Turf offers them in perfect balance and measure.
