Playful, Cozy Atmosphere
The first thing patrons of the Fat Belgian are likely to see when they enter the restaurant is a painting of a fat Belgian with a cigar and giant glass of beer. The painting, and indeed the restaurant's name, captures the playful spirit of the place. The décor is simple and elegant. There are dark wood beams, hardwood floors and a marble bar. The second floor dining room features floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto John Street. The Fat Belgian has live music every Thursday between 8 p.m. and midnight. The restaurant has been open since the spring of 2006.

Belgian Mussels
A section of the restaurant's menu is dedicated to “Moules et Frites,” mussels and fries. Mussels, particularly when steamed, are a delicacy of Belgium. The “Moules Provinciale” come steamed in a tomato and herb sauce. The “Moule Belgique” come steamed in white wine. The “Fat Belgian Moules” are perhaps the ones to top it all off: they come steamed in Belgian beer, with toasted walnuts, leeks and Gruyere cheese.

The Main Menu
The restaurant offers plenty of hearty meals. Entrées include porterhouse steak, pork tenderloin, beef stew, pot pie and duck confit. Belgian beer is used in the cooking of many of the dishes. There are some options for vegetarians, including the mushroom-asparagus risotto. There is also a selection of puff pastry pizzas. The Fat Belgian also takes its beer very seriously. There are more than 20 bottled beers and half a dozen types of draught available. All but a few are Belgian imports.
