No Fuss and Snooty-Free
The Cobourg is a laid-back and easygoing bar where feeling at home is a normal rite of passage. This modest sized room has high ceilings with chandeliers, paintings on the wall by local artists and a lot of antique-y looking Victorian armchairs and couches. The dim lighting and the sconces on the wall with lit candles bring a comforting vibe that is enveloped in a carefree setting. The large mirror behind the bar helps make the place feel a little bigger than it is. One of the charming qualities about the Cobourg is the back room. This space, which is less than a quarter of the size of the main room, is a perfect hideaway for intimate encounters and first dates.

Not Just for Locals
The Cobourg opened its doors in Cabbagetown in 2006 without any fanfare and no major publicity blitz. The timing for this place was perfect and with a steady word-of-mouth, it has generated a supportive clientele. The community has wholeheartedly embraced this unassuming but elegant looking bar that is now getting frequent regulars from outside the neighbourhood. It’s catering to a mainly late 20 to 40-something clientele that still like to go out for drinks, but without the commotion of a downtown scene.

Uptempo Weekends
During the week, The Cobourg has a relaxed environment with soothing background music (ranging from jazz to electronica), which is conducive to conversation. On the weekends, they take it up a notch and have DJs giving the spot a bit of a “clubby” vibe. Sunday nights however, have been the jazz nights that have been bringing out the jazz crowd from around the city. Every Sunday there’s a band that performs, which includes some of the cities best players. The Cobourg is a must for those who are looking for an exquisite experience without a pretentious ambience.
