Textile Affections
Cloth, culture and art connect at the Textile Museum of Canada, incorporated in 1975 in a modest gallery space, before moving into its current central facility in 1989. The museum is one of only eight in the world, and the only one in Canada, dedicated to the collection, exhibition and documentation of textiles from around the world, with traditions, skills and creative processes reflected in 12,000 pieces.
Worldwide Reach
The Textile Museum of Canada’s permanent collection spans 2,000 years and 200 world regions, including fabrics, ceremonial cloths, garments, carpets, quilts and related artifacts. The ethnographic, cultural and aesthetic significance of cloth is reflected in the museum’s mission. Public tours are available on Sunday, along with group and school visits facilitated throughout the week. Lectures reflect the passion of textile scholars, and artist talks, embroidery workshops, textile seminars and musical performances are regular fixtures of the museum.
Fresh Perspectives
Exhibitions at the Textile Museum of Canada have included Cloth That Shook the World, showing the relationship between textiles and significant historical events. A show called The Blues was exclusively dedicated to the mystique of the colour. The museum is also known its annual Shadow Box Auction, featuring smaller-scaled art works created especially by artists and local personalities. The Museum Shop also carries one-of-a-kind original works and textile-related books.
