Part restaurant, part bar, College Street hangout Teatro does an admirable job of being all things, to all people. A summertime treat for both Torontonians and visitors, Teatro features not one but two patios – one facing the buzz of College, the other Palmerston Avenue – both of which offer enviable vistas for people-watching. Inside, fashionable servers pour a variety of vintages from a well-stocked wine bar, as well as a variety of other alcoholic concoctions.
Dinner for Two
The intimate surroundings are perfect for a second or third date, once the couple has gotten comfortable with each other. The restaurant is famous for its steak frites (striploin served with tasty French fries), as well as grilled calamari, mushroom risotto, and the pappardelle (noodles with sautéed shrimps and scallops in a tarragon cream sauce).
A Good Time for Everyone
In the late evening, Teatro’s vibe changes and becomes more of a social scene. Live DJs spin an eclectic mix of independent and dance music. The owners insist, however, that they “refuse to play house music,” in order to set themselves apart from their beat-heavy College Street neighbours. With its friendly service, simple food, and casual vibe, Teatro satisfies the needs of both the neighbourhood artist and the industry professional.
