The Spoke Club is a place where people with an interest in the arts, entertainment or media can gather. To that end it boasts a screening room, an upscale dining service, a rooftop garden, reading room, boardroom, conference facilities and a lot of lounge and meeting space. It also hosts the Tatar Art Gallery.
Members Only
The Spoke Club is private. The annual fee for residents of the GTA is $800 plus a one-time initiation fee of $500. If you don’t have a residence in the Toronto area, the annual fee is $400 plus the initiation. Members are generally expected to have ties to the arts, entertainment or media. When the application is complete, a membership committee reviews it and you will be notified in writing.
Be My Guest?
There are some exceptions to this membership process. You can be allowed to enter the club as a guest of a member. A free one year “artist membership” is available to gold medal winning graduates at the Ontario College of Art and Design. It is also offered to senior film, television and new media students at the Canadian Film Centre. The public is also welcome to attend the public opening night of the Tatar Gallery’s exhibitions.
Getting your Money’s Worth
Once you pay your fees you don’t have to pay a cent more if you don’t want to. There are no charges to book any of the facilities such as the screening or meeting rooms. The meals are upscale comfort food, but are moderately priced. The most popular dish is The Spoke Club burger which is served with Yukon Gold Fries and is said to be absolutely delicious.
