This cavernous banquet hall seats up to 600 people in the rear of the Woodside Square Mall in Agincourt. Ruby serves up dim sum favourites for breakfast and all degrees of Asian delicacies day and night. Both traditional Cantonese fare and the familiar variations modified for Canadian tastes. For a family outing, the extraordinary set dinner provides two courses of lobster and/or Peking duck along with three other items from the vast 11-page menu, which includes a vegetarian page.
Big Brother is Serving You
There’s so much action during the prime mealtime at Ruby, the hosts are armed with walkie-talkies, and the kitchen announces via loudspeaker when each table’s items are ready. Further adding to the festive atmosphere is the karaoke stage, and servers roaming throughout the room with carts of streaming trays of red meat, pork, seafood or tofu dishes, and relentless refills of tea.
Chopstick Chops
The soup is complimentary at Ruby, an overture to main courses that offer plenty of opportunities to practice one’s chopstick chops. Stir-fried dishes, from broccoli to scallops, are perfectly suited for sharing. Desserts are highlighted by traditional tapioca pudding. Ruby is one of the landmarks of Agincourt, transformed in the 1980s from an innocuous Scarborough village into a suburban hub for the Chinese community. Its green-tiled pagoda roof entrance is a beacon for those seeking a satisfying meal in a raucously upbeat setting.
