Established with the support of leading figures in Toronto society, the Royal Conservatory was founded in 1886, and first officially opened 1887. The first institution of its kind in Canada, it is simultaneously a school dedicated to training singers and musicians, and a tour de force in instilling the love of music in young children. Originally housed on two floors above a music store at the corner of Dundas Street and Yonge Street, the Royal Conservatory has come a long way.
…to Great Heights
The conservatory has since relocated and grown, expanding its programs to include The RCM Community School, The Glenn Gould School, the Young Artists Performance Academy, Learning Through the Arts, The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited, and RCM Examinations. With its new state-of-the-art TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning, and new programming initiatives and technologies, the conservatory is striving towards being Canada's largest arts institutions, and already reaches more than one million Canadians each year.
