Although its name may be deemed crass to some (“mangiacake” is an old Italian term to describe those of Anglo descent), the loyal patrons that dine at Mangiacake Panini Shoppe don’t seem to mind. Take it as it is meant, as a humorous jab at the establishment’s love for white bread, or simply to describe the loaves used to sandwich their paninis. Mangiacake has been a staple for the Baldwin Village hood since 2005.
Milan-Style Cafe
Housed in a re-vamped Victorian building, Mangiacake oozes casual charm. Hardwood floors, mismatched tables and chairs, a white-painted hearth, and potted plants in the windows only adds to the allure of this Milan-style café. A slight porch gives way to views of the AGO and OCAD, while a serene backyard patio comprises a scene of latticed walls, gravelly ground, shady trees, and a bathtub converted to a garden.
The Three Ps
The fare is wholly Italian, a delicious arrangement of the three ps: panini, pasta, and pizza. Start with some antipasto, like the chickpea salad (made with cucumbers and sweet peppers), or the spicy olive (with sauteed garlic and Italian herbs). Pastas are balanced between carnivore and vegetarian counterparts, spanning lasagna, canneloni, and arancini. A trio of 8-inch pizzas are proffered in veggie, pepperoni, and blanco (grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, pesto, and soy mozzarella), alongside a duo of calzones (veggie and non). Lastly, the namesake panini is available in twelve varieties, including tuna with artichokes, marinated grilled veggies with basil and goat cheese, chicken breast with brie and rucola, and a daily chef’s creation.
