By the Numbers
Seven bars spread over four floors of three converted Victorian homes amounts to the massive Annex landmark known as The Madison. There are four fireplaces, three dart areas and a couple of pool tables, over 50 televisions and 150 draft taps. Weekend nights, one guy leads sing-a-longs from a piano, while another strums familiar hits on guitar, all while grub is delivered from three different kitchens. The result is up to 2000 people on a weekend evening enjoying a sophisticated complex with brass fittings, oak bars, and warm décor. There’s a Tuesday night poker tournament and wing specials every Wednesday, while midday weekends are devoted to dishing out brunch. The five-level patio is something to behold in warmer months – each area has its own bar, and all are edged with trees, flowerpots and baskets, creating a cottage feel in a big bar in the big city.

Young at Heart
University of Toronto students and young Annex residents have kept The Madison hopping for well over two decades, engaging in their timeless rituals within the timeless atmosphere. Bottles, pints and pitchers of all the brewery staples are in limitless supply, and there’s a serviceable list for the wine inclined. The main menu is tailored for quick-filling satisfaction – quesadillas, calamari, mozzarella sticks and more, available for half price between 3pm and 7pm. In addition to all the staple burgers and sandwiches, plus daily specials, there’s seafood linguine, roast chicken in Yorkshire pudding, pork schnitzel and fundamental fish ‘n’ chips. However, as the night goes on, The Madison’s focus moves from meat eating to meeting.
