A sign on the door of Luis Coffee Shop says it all: “you can Starbucks, or you can save bucks.” The corner coffee shop in Kensington Market has been serving up some of the finest espresso-based beverages in the same tiny space for over 40 years. If you’re looking for Starbucks quality, without paying the premium prices, or using their strange ordering language, this is the coffee shop for you. Finally, you’ll be able to say “small,” “medium,” and “large” again.
Location, Location, Location
Luis Coffee Shop, whether by divine accident, or careful planning, follows the three rules of real estate. Located on the corner of Baldwin and Augusta, this tiny café offers some of the best opportunities for people watching in all of Toronto – or maybe (this might be going a little too far), the world. Find your way to the shop early on a Saturday morning, stake out a seat at the bar that overlooks either street, and you’ll see. From colourful locals to frenzied drivers, to visiting 905’ers, the opportunities for people watching are endless, varied, and always entertaining.
No Frills, Just Flavour
Luis’ no-nonsense menu does away with a lot of frills, and focuses on basic café standards like espresso, lattes, and cappuccino. In fact, there are only six items on the menu. For those who don’t like coffee, there’s super-rich hot chocolate and hot apple cider. Service is quick and friendly, and if your order is to stay, you’ll get your beverage in a fancy glass mug – all the better to admire it with!
