Choose Your Own Adventure
Kensington Market is one of the oldest and most famed hubs in the city of Toronto, celebrated for its multiculturalism, worldly goods, and lively bar scene. Occupying a large, four block radius, Kensington assumes the character of an open air market during the day, where pedestrians will encounter a little bit of everything. Established in the early 20th century by Jewish immigrants, the Market has evolved over the past hundred years to become a landmark for Toronto’s diversity. The neighbourhood is peppered with shops that specialize in Caribbean, South American, African, West Indian, Asian, European, and Middle Eastern flavours and products—be assured, no other place in the city upholds this sense of medley within one community.

Take a Stroll
Locals have come to know that Kensington is the place to get fresh foods on the cheap. Fruit and vegetable stands, primarily along Augusta Avenue, are piled high with juicy produce at a fraction of the price you would pay at the grocery store. Baldwin Avenue is lined with meat butchers, fish and seafood, bulk herbs and spices, baked goods, as well as cheese and chocolate shops. For clothing, Kensington Avenue is home to a slew of vintage shops and independent designers, which is easily sighted by the outdoor racks that display their wares. For new and used home décor items, a handful of stores retail retro designer, classic, and artistic furnishings and accessories. Odds and ends include music, books, bicycles, bargain stores, hardware, electronics, linens, carpets, tattoos and piercing, hair salons, and much more.

When Night Falls
Of course, dining out in Kensington is just as eclectic an experience as is the rest of the market. The famished can sate themselves at one of the many restaurants that specialize in Portuguese, Lao, Thai, Mexican, Hungarian, Chilean, French, Asian fusion, and vegetarian fare. Cafes abound, many with street side patios that present a unique opportunity to observe the buzzing surrounds. As nightfall hits the streets and the shops close for the day, the action begins anew. Bars and lounges enlivened with DJs and bands play the tunes till the wee hours of the morning, while relaxed pubs keep the beer flowing whilst chatting among friends.
