Help for the Hard Times
John Howard is a non-profit society that provides a variety of services, programs and counselling options to help clients work through problems with housing, employment status, the criminal justice system, social assistance and substance abuse. Depending on the problem, individuals may refer themselves to society courses, or be referred by outside agencies and counsellors.

Easing the Transition
Since problems arising from incarceration are at the heart of JHS, a large part of the society’s work takes place inside the walls of Toronto’s detentions centres. Counsellors and volunteers conduct programs on drug awareness and help inmates prepare for their impending release. Workers also facilitate couples counselling, offer referrals for the children of inmates and help men learn to cope with aggression and end abuse patterns. The JHS employment services offered to former inmates counsel clients when it comes to resume preparation, the writing of a cover letter, interview attire and conduct and general support in exiting prison. Together with this are the society’s literacy program and their youth employment counselling centre for young people in search of a post-secondary career path.

Advocates for Change
Lastly, JHS works to break down the negative connotations associated with incarceration by keeping the community abreast of current issues within the organization, as well as within the general sphere of criminal justice. The society’s call for social and correctional change is heard via deputations, letters, meetings, and liaisons with community coalitions.
