Hot in Here
A “hopper” may be the Sri Lankan version of a breakfast crepe, but the eatery’s name could just as easily be a description of the out of body experience that the Hopper Hut’s aggressive south Indian spicing can cause. Prepare for flames with almost any dish at the Hopper Hut – except for maybe the hoppers themselves – and have no shame in ordering a side of yogurt to cool yourself down. When the Hopper Hut says “spicy”, they really mean it.

Hopper Heaven
Recently renovated in its Ellesmere Road digs, Hopper Hut naturally specializes in hoppers, made with rice flour and served in fours. One comes with an egg, two plain and one with milk (for the option of adding sugar too in order to eat it as a dessert). If lunch or dinner is what you’re after, try their lampries, which come wrapped almost as a roti in a banana leaf, and are filled with basmati rice, your choice of meat, a vegetable curry, egg, dried fish, diced potato and spicy onion mixture. The restaurant has Kothu Rottis also, which are not “rotis” as those familiar with the West or East Indian roti might expect, but a mixture of chopped bread, scrambled eggs, onions, green chillies, and meat—be it chicken or mutton or otherwise.

Dessert Included
Vegetable curries fill out the menu and are also served with a generous bed of basmati rice. They often include a dessert of tapioca custard in the price, which is perhaps the second and only non-spicy option on the menu at the Hopper Hut. With most meals on the menu including dessert, you need not worry about breaking the bank as you explore a whole new cuisine at the Hopper Hut.
