Graffiti’s is a bar dedicated to the promotion and development of local bands playing roots, blues, and jazz, as well as newer subgenres like rockabilly. Local acts to have graced Graffiti’s’ stage include the Kensington Hillbillies, Sin City Boys, and the Rizdales. Graffiti’s’ “old-time” atmosphere – threadbare throw carpets and upholstery, the saloon-style piano, the old garage door that serves as Graffiti’s’ front wall – complements the venerable tradition of the music being performed.
A Bar That Really Is All About the Music
Graffiti’s has live music all year round, playing most days of the week (sometimes every day), and their schedule has followed something of a pattern. Lesser-known, up-and-coming bands tend to play earlier in the week, while established acts play closer to the weekend, including regular Saturday and Sunday afternoon matinee gigs. Graffiti’s also hosts open mikes, to give an opportunity for undiscovered locals to showcase their talents. In the summertime, Graffiti’s opens up the front wall/garage door facing onto Baldwin Street, and books more singer-songwriter acts to appease the neighbours. Louder bands play in the winter, when the door is firmly shut.
Music to the Ears, Eyes, and Tastebuds
Graffiti’s wears its love of music on its sleeve – or on its walls, rather, which are covered with colourful, swirling paintings. The musical themes hearken back to the jazzy, bluesy days of the early decades of the 20th century. Fulfilling the second half of the “bar and grill” requirements, Graffiti’s features a menu consisting principally of pub fare at reasonable prices, including potato skins with sour cream, onion rings, and a selection of sandwiches and pizzas made from scratch.
