Tiny yet incredibly popular, Gandhi Cuisine has a long tradition as being one of the city’s standout restaurants. Seating less than a dozen people inside of its encroaching walls, the place is all about the takeout. Yes, it seems strange that virtually all patrons happily take their selection home instead of dining on the spot, but it’s true. Still, having to take their food to-go hasn’t discouraged many from waiting in line for the eatery’s wide choice of Indian dishes. The most popular being Gandhi’s various incarnations of roti – a delicate pastry bread made of whole wheat flour, baked and filled with options including chicken, beef, or a vegetarian melange (potatoes et al).
Food Before Ambiance
Sparsely decorated, Gandhi Cuisine focuses on the food. One could barely swing a cat without hitting the flatly painted walls, but that’s part of the greasy-spoon aura that makes the food here enticing to the curious and fans alike. Having no time to concern themselves with accessories and accoutrements, surely they must be overwhelmed with their food crafting. Apparently so, as the shop’s large front picture window is indelibly filled with beaming faces munching away.
A Hotspot Within a Hotspot
Surrounded by an endless stream of Mom and Pop stores, Gandhi Cuisine may be one-of-a-kind in its goods and service, but it is certainly at home in the city’s downtown core. Plunked casually right in the heart of the popular Queen Street strip –itself renowned as the place for evening fun seekers to stroll about on the way to one of the countless watering holes – it is most certainly in its essence.
