There’s a saying about the Chinese notion of balancing taste – food must have elements of sweet, sour, bitter, salty and pungent. In some cuisines, this is a recipe for disaster, but not at Furama Cake & Dessert Garden where the sweet and salty mingle. Many types of breads, buns, sandwiches and cakes grace the counters daily. A kitschy favourite is the delightfully lowbrow hot dog bun, whereby a cocktail wiener is wrapped in a sweetish egg bread bun. Other salty standbys include the curry bun (with ground curried beef), onion tuna buns, ham and processed cheese buns and bacon and green onion buns. Chinese pastries live by the yellowy-sweet egg bread mixture, so you’d better like it if you’re munching here.
The Rules
There’s a protocol to be followed when you are selecting treats at Furama. First grab your standard-issue plastic cafeteria tray and a pair of tongs and carefully select your preferred bun or pastry. Then head over to the cash, where the cashier will then package your food in a white cardboard box or in bags for your eating pleasure.
Starchy Goodness
Also sold here are perfectly square half-loaves of white bread and egg bread, as are delicious custard egg tarts with flaky pastry and a firm, sunny yellow custard in the middle. Various types of cakes (often very fresh, with fruits to decorate) and mousses (mmm, mango mousse!) are baked and decorated to order for special occasions as well. Later on in the day, buns are often discounted for bulk purchases – perfect for breakfast or your midday snack.
