Urban Design
The current owner took over the previous Elan furniture store in 1998, keeping the original name while adding his own flavour of Urban Monkey. Described as the place where customer service is more personalized than bigger furniture chains, this independent outlet prides itself on affordable contemporary and compact, condo-sized furnishings in dark woods, rich leathers and soft suedes. This is the place for those who want something hip and urban while passing the minimalist feel of IKEA and proceeding with something a bit more upscale.
Designer Names
Elan stocks Cambie sofas starting from $1,495, and locally-made Ferretti leather chairs in subtle and bright tones. Coffee tables and consoles come in steel, polished nickel, glass and wood and offer 1,500 customized fabrics and about 500 leathers, mainly for sofas. Bedroom sel¬ections include the Taylor collection, which offers storage under the bed—handy for condo dwellers. Customers can also visit the company’s bulletin board/website in order to stay in the loop of new products and even give suggestions of what specific furniture they’re looking for.
Service at an Affordable Price
Clientele are in their late 30s and early 40s and come from both the neighbourhood and Mississauga and other suburbs. The store’s motto is to get the customer the most bang for their buck by selling quality furnishing at a mid-range price. The Ella collection, for example, features a coffee, end, and console table made from solid birch with a dark espresso ash veneer. The shape, though, is nothing Plain Jane with its jagged car jack design.
