But they also describe the merchandise at Dessert Lady, a Yorkville destination for cakes, cookies, and homemade sorbet and ice cream. Located on Cumberland Street, this sweet shop, though small, manages to stock enough treats to cripple the willpower of just about anyone. From gourmet truffles to cheesecakes, it is a challenge to leave empty-handed.
Creative Ice Creams and Takeout Sized Cakes
Dessert shops enjoyed a brief boom in the early ’90s, but there has been a dearth of new dessert-focused cafes in recent years and many restaurants seem to serve the same cakes. Well, no more. At Dessert Lady, specialties include mouth-watering soufflé, liquid-centre warm chocolate cake, and homemade ice cream to satisfy cake-lovers and sweet tooths alike. The shop also offers a “plated dessert,” which is essentially an individual takeout sized cake served with a choice of ice cream. For those who want something a little less calorie-rich, there is a handful of homemade sorbets in flavours that change with the seasons, but are always a little on the unusual side, such as coconut cantalope or white nectarine. The homemade ice cream is similarly inventive, and made with all-natural ingredients.

Cakes are available by special order in four sizes, from six inches to a large slab cake. Custom sizes and shapes for weddings and other special events can also be ordered. There are 12 types of cheesecake, from classic chocolate and mocha praline to chocolate Bailey’s and mango. The store also offers mousse cakes in unique flavours such as pina colada and coconut mango, as well as ice cream cakes and traditional creations including strawberry shortcake, tiramisu and double chocolate cake.
