The Original…Since 1953
The original location stands here at Claremont Street in Little Italy. Not on the main College Street strip, you’ll find California Sandwiches tucked away, just south of College and Manning. The whole California Sandwiches franchise began here in the fabulous ‘50s. The family running the grocery store noticed that more customers were coming into their grocery shop for lunch, and so California Sandwiches was born. Having started as a family business, the franchise continues in this tradition today.
Award-winning Eats
The famous sandwich here is the thinly pounded classic Italian-style veal sandwich. Animal rights activists be aware: the veal sandwich (among others) has consistently won rave reviews by foodies on gourmet blogs, the Toronto Sun newspaper, as well as NOW Magazine readers and Toronto Life Magazine. Now that’s a sandwich! In addition to the famous veal cutlet sandwich, you can order chicken cutlet, eggplant, sausage, steak and meatball sandwiches. Toppings such as hot peppers, onions, cheese, olives, mushrooms and sweet peppers may also adorn your delicious creation. Each location offers something different. You may find coffee and side salads available, as well as soups, sandwiches, fries or even an espresso bar. However, the one thing they have in common is the sandwiches.

Not only that, but each location – and there are eight scattered across the Greater Toronto Area – employs a butcher on-site to cut the meat.
