Located in Leslieville, Bonjour Brioche is Atkins’ kryptonite. The Queen East bakery specializes in fresh-from-the-oven brioche, cakes, quiche, baguettes and croissants in a variety of flavours including chocolate, almond and custard. If you’re looking for something more substantial -or you can’t justify passing a chocolate croissant off as lunch - check out their selection of sandwiches. Though brunch is the big deal at Bonjour Brioche, lunchers will enjoy some of the best sandwiches in the city, built on fresh-baked baguettes. Vegetarian and meat options are available and fillings include roast beef, thyme, caramelized onions and more. You’ll also find a daily soup and savoury tart du jour on the specials board every day.
Breakfast: The Most Important Meal of the Day
The small bakery is warmly coloured, with walls in shades of pumpkin spice, black-and-white photos hang over the tables and soft jazz and folk music plays in the background. With less than a dozen tables however, it’s best to plan ahead and get there early if you want to avoid waiting for your meal. Another option is to call ahead for a picnic brunch to take home, to the park, or over to a friend’s for a homemade meal you won’t have to work for. The baked French toast is a popular breakfast choice. Laden with cinnamon and laced with a layer of sugar, this is a rich, thick dish that will satisfy your sweet tooth. If you’re a more traditional breakfaster, you won’t find the standard Saturday morning fare that most breakfast places boast –there’s no “two eggs, toast, homefries and ham” deal - but you will find options like scrambled eggs over potato rosti with smoked salmon, the Provencal omelette with gruyere, and a cheesy breakfast quiche.
