Profile Last Updated: July 30, 2009
The Bathurst Street Theatre is located on a site that housed a Methodist church in the 1860s, and the current building dates from 1888, later being part of the United Church of Canada. The families that formed the core of the congregation gradually moved out of the area, and the building turned into a site for discussion forums, concerts and plays. By the mid-1980s, its religious function moved to another site, leaving behind a full-time arts venue for the Annex neighbourhood.
Arts Academy
Today, the 500-seat theatre houses the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, an institution that nurtures song, dance and acting skills for young people.
Centre of Song
Ticketed events at the Bathurst Street Theatre throughout the year are highlighted by the local shows of the Fringe of Toronto Festival. The church setting remains a favourite for gospel performers and opera singers, as well as comedic spoken word solo performers. The stage is also perfectly suited for pop and rock operas, ranging from a revival of Godspell to Evil Dead (parts I and II) to Disney’s High School Musical.
