Baked Goods for the Gods
Named for the archetypical Greek goddess of war and wisdom, the Athena Bakery is a quaint little sweets shop on the Danforth featuring a wide variety of baked treats. A glass L-shaped cabinet runs from the left up to the back, housing the selection of freshly made goods. Here you’ll find individually priced items like Black Forest cake, nugatin (a nougat confection), strawberry shortcake and several vanilla and strawberry treats.

Get Your Caffeine Buzz Through Cake
There is a variety of sinful ‘Coke’ desserts (chocolate drizzled custard-cream sponge cakes) as well as tiramisu (an Italian dessert made with lady fingers, espresso coffee and mascarpone cheese) and a few different cheesecakes. On a table in the centre of the room you can purchase packaged sets of cookies and donuts, breads and eight-slice pies of baklava, a traditional Ottoman favourite or kataif a Middle-Eastern pastry.

Expressions of Turkish Delight
If you’re headed to a birthday party, or one of the desserts particularly strikes your fancy, you may want to buy one of the full cakes. They also sell assorted baklava, biscotti (some layered in chocolate), macaroons, éclairs and Greek canoli in bulk, but you must purchase at least six pieces. For do-it-your-self-ers, the cabinets on your right are filled to the brim with baking ingredients ideal for many of the classic Greek desserts.

Pour It On
There are a number of olive oils, spices like oregano, sea salt, ground sesame and mint leaves, baking beans (Greek white wine and elephant beans, for example) and dozens of fruit preservatives (like bitter orange, sour cherry, quince and eggplant). You can also purchase pre-packaged chocolates and biscuits, Turkish delights (by Hazer Baba) and tins of mints or praline-filled wafers. Athena Bakery also deals in Greek-themed souvenirs, with a handy selection of ornate vases, bronze plates and necklaces in the showcase window and on shelves behind the clerk’s counter.
