Genuine Italian
Another addition to the vibrant Kensington Market community, Aspetta Caffe is located at the tail end of Augusta, across from Bellevue Square Park. Opening in the spring of ’08, Aspetta is modeled after the genuine Italian café experience. In fact, the name means “wait” in Italian, which isn’t an indicator of its serving times, but rather of a lifestyle where one may enjoy a leisurely latte without rushing off post-haste to the next destination.
Simple Décor
The pint-sized interior features a dark wood service counter with built-in glass display proffering the daily dolce. A black chalkboard behind the bar serves as the Caffe’s menu, while a small seating area is furnished with funky white tables and chairs. The white walls are peppered with artwork by Finnish-Torontonian artist Sami Suomalainen, and a flat-screen TV plays football for the fans. A steel garage door at the entry opens up to make way for the fence-less terrace, made up of simple slatted wood deck chairs.
Free Popcorn?!
The fare is, of course, very Italian. Moderately priced, the menu spans paninis, pasta, and desserts. Try the proscuitto and fontina panini, quattro formaggi pasta, lasagna, panzarotti, and pasta salads. For dolce, the line-up includes biscotti, canoli, tiramsu, and chocolate cookies, quite enjoyable with chai, an espresso, or cappuccino. Fully licensed, Aspetta stocks local wine and beer, as well as some imports like Peroni. If you arrive around the early evening, Aspetta hands out free bowls of popcorn with the purchase of an alcoholic beverage.
