Just past the hype surrounding Little Italy, the location of Alice’s Restaurant is a few blocks beyond the conventional beaten track. Done away with all that excessive poshness, the short-lived niche markets, and the overnight fads that die away as soon as they become comfortable, Alice’s Restaurant is a real place for real food. This philosophy conforms nicely to its neighbourhood surroundings, an area much more low-key than its eastern counterpart.
Simple Elegance
The decorative theme of Alice’s Restaurant can best be described as contemporary classic. Creamy orange hues mark the bricked exterior, tastefully smothered as well on the French doors that enfold into pseudo-al fresco dining. Stark black lettering on a light background is classic and indeed eye-catching. Inside, black half-booths and chairs, a wrap-around ebony bar, silvery-gray walls dotted with local artwork, all capped off with a vibrant red ceiling for some contrast. The rear houses a large patio suitable for up to70 diners, a serene space to eat and drink beneath tall trees.
Super Fresh
As social and environmental conscience spreads, the fresh, organic and local movement is quite present at Alice’s. This being so, the dinner menu at this restaurant changes as the seasons do, keeping the ingredients as fresh as the bill du jour. A sampling: starters like crab cakes, grilled asparagus salad and fennel mussel saffron cream soup. Entrées, such as roast B.C. halibut (served with grainy mustard sauce), pan-roasted cornish hen au jus, grilled Manhatten steak and goat cheese ravioli (with swiss chard, fresh tomato sauce and plum vinegar). In keeping with the local, Alice’s Restaurant has a well-balanced wine list that spans the Niagara region, certified by the Vitner’s Quality Alliance.
