A remnant of the old industrial Queen Street West strip, before all the fashion retailers moved in, Active Surplus continues to sell electronic spare parts on the second floor, with its gorilla mascot welcoming shoppers on street level. There are aisles of bulk bins organized in sections like tools, hardware and computer parts that are practical for restoring an old item, or inventing one from scratch.
Science Projects
Active Surplus carries drill bits, sand paper, plugs and bolts, plus medical supplies like test tubes, pipettes, scalpels and dentistry tools, which are perfect for science projects, film shoot mockups or costume play. The store will pick up bulk quantities of stuff from just about anyone, figuring there will be a demand for it someday, especially parts for telephones, light bulbs, televisions and radios, along with the bins filled with batteries, plugs, gears and bolts. Fuses, wires, AC adapters, cable, motors, gears and transformers are also available on the cheap.
Prehistoric Computers
The history of computer components is on display at Active Surplus, including strange adaptors, esoteric circuit boards, and rare hardware and software that can still work. The store has downsized in recent years to make way for more upscale retailers, but the gorilla remains as a friendly presence for pedestrians, frequently joined by a barker shouting out details of what the store has to offer.
