3rd Quadrant is another downtown option for comic book and collectables fanatics, having opened its doors in 1986. The store is jammed full with stuff, with boxes upon boxes of back-issue comics stacked on top each other. Action figures dangle from the pipes and ceiling, with rare comics decorating every inch of bare wall space. As one enters the snug labyrinth of nerdy paraphernalia, they’ll pass cases stocked full with statues before passing into the den of comics and toys.
Toys for Big Kids
At 3rd Quadrant, the comics are the biggest sellers, doing about 50% of the business, with weekly new issues being the most popular. Most fans come in for the household DC and Marvel names (Spider-Man, Superman, Batman) but 3rd Quadrant does carry many rarer titles. The action figures occupy the right portion of the store, including an elaborate mix of dark and twisted Todd McFarlane lines, and more colorful kid-friendly Fantastic Four & X-men toys. The store does a lot of business in more pricey but detailed statue and maquette replicas of fave characters for the hardcore collectors, and there are plenty of dollar bins for the bargain geeks. And if the comics don’t satisfy the comic bookworms, 3rd Quadrant features racks full of new and used magazines (Starlog, Buffy, X-files) and an entire line of trade paperbacks.
