Profile
This collection, on display in the Samuel European Galleries, contains over 90 objects; 68 are exhibited in this installation. Objects range from a Dutch snuff box of 1889 to Torah finials, Passover dishes, Hanukah lamps, and Esther scrolls. The collection embraces Judaica in several different media: metalwork, ceramics, glass, textiles, and paper.
Among the more unusual items are two splendid examples of Judaica in Art Nouveau style: an English circumcision certificate of 1906 with a lavish green Art Nouveau border, and a rare, Danish, pewter charity box of 1901, of which fewer than 60 were ever made. The Art Nouveau charity box was designed by sculptor Siegfried Wagner (1874-1952) and produced by the Danish post-impressionist painter Mogens Ballin (1871-1914) for the Copenhagen Tiferes Jedidim, a society for the care of the sick established there in 1821.
Other rare objects in this collection include an English ceramic tankard made after 1788 with a depiction of the Jewish boxer Daniel Mendoza, and a range of porcelain Havdalah dishes by continental European factories previously unrecorded in the ROM's ceramics collection. One object of particular interest in the collection is a Chalitzah shoe, shown to spectacular advantage in the new installation.
Objects in the Weinberg Collection associated with Hanukah include menorahs and dreidls in different materials. One of the menorahs, of distinctive Viennese type, was the first object the Weinbergs acquired for their collection.
The theme of marriage finds representation in a richly ornamented Italian Ketubah (marriage certificate) of distinctive Ancona type, Bohemian porcelain dishes with Yiddish inscriptions and a Thuringian (German) porcelain cream pitcher of 1767-1800 from the Volkstedt factory.
As displayed at the ROM, the collection finds a central focus in a display of objects associated with the Torah: a pair of Warsaw silver Torah finials (or rimonnim), Torah shields, handles, and pointers. Another case, focussing on the Days of Awe, presents a shofar, etrog box, prayer book cover, and an unusually large "Tree of Life" New Year's card from the 1920s.
The theme of Charity is separately addressed by a remarkable group of charity boxes of different dates, and places of origin. Among them are examples of the famous JNF boxes which first appeared in 1904 and continue in production to the present day.
Dr and Mrs Weinberg donated their European Judaica collections to the ROM in 1999. Dr Weinberg, a noted Toronto pediatrician, is widely respected for his involvement in the Jewish community and has published over 50 articles on Judaica.
